Celiac Screening: When Will It Get More Respect?

I ABSOLUTELY think it should be a newborn screening!!! My baby boy was diagnosed with sandifer syndrome at 6weeks, it's an extreme reflux disorder. He was born in the fiftieth percentile and by six months dropped to three percentile. He slept all the time, was in constant pain and was always hungry. At seven months I thought to research gluten sensitivity. He had seven of the top ten symptoms. It turns out that approximately %1 of the gluten we ingest passed through breast milk. I cut gluten immediately, constantly research and find new hidden sources of gluten. Now, at a year old, he has gained over five pounds and five inches, has markedly less sandifer events, and laughs and plays. He currently is at a fifty percent global delay developmental. Had I known about his gluten problems at birth I don't think we would have gone through hell for the first seven months of his life!

Tiffiny, Thank you so much for sharing. I am so sorry for what you and your baby went through but so very glad you found so much improvement through diet!! Wow!
It makes me so very sad that you had to discover this on your own and it makes me so very sad wondering how many others are going through this without knowing that a "simple" diet change would make all the difference in the world.

His gi specialist said it's pretty rare to see this in newborns, and that they don't test for celiacs until they are a year old. But if it's known that gluten passes through the milk then it's obvious, at least to me, that it should be checked!! They just tell you to cut dairy and eggs when they have extreme reflux because those are the most common contributor to reflux in babies.
