By Heather M Olivarez (THE WOODLANDS, TX, US) - This review is from: Adam's Gluten Free Surprise, Helping Others Understand Gluten Free (Kindle Edition) Love this book! My 8 year old loves it, because he has Celiac Disease, and the book explains the condition in a way he can understand. We have also shown the book to family members and his school, and now everyone understands that my little guy can not eat BROWN (barley, rye, oats, wheat, never ever!). :) |
I received this message from a mom who recently shared 'Adam' with her daughter.
I am sharing with her permission. Thank you Cathy!
"My 8 year old daughter was diagnosed with Celiac in July. I tried to buy her a copy of Adam's Gluten Free Surprise for Christmas, but I couldn't get a copy in our local book stores, so I bought her a Kindle and the first book we downloaded was this one. She immediately read the whole book to me and we were shocked at how much her past 5 months mirrored Adam's. She has not yet met another Celiac child and it made her feel so good to read this and know she isn't alone in this journey. Many times, she feels like she is the only child dealing with this and it was heart-warming to hear her read Adam's story and know that other children are experiencing the same issues and feel the same as she does. Unfortunately, I think she is now hoping that on Valentine's Day she will experience Hailey's Gluten Free Surprise! Thank you for such an awesome book for children coping with Celiac. I can't wait to get my hands on a hard copy for her to share at school. Every school should have a copy of this book!"

From Amazon customers: 5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book !, April 24, 2011
SS This is a wonderful book for both children and adults on the awareness of a gluten free diet. The book is easy to read, entertaining and educational. I would recommend it to anyone with a child on a gluten free diet For for parents, grandparents, baby sitters, teachers etc. for an easy understanding of the diet. 5.0 out of 5 stars Informative, fun, well-written, and helpful for all ages, May 15, 2012 carrie (Stantonsburg, NC, United States) Just received a review copy of this book. It's a fantastic resource for parents of kids with celiac disease and food allergies. This book -- through a simple, but meaningful story -- shows children and parents alike how to educate friends, family, teachers, and other parents about reading food labels, learning about cross-contamination, educating children and parents, etc. The story is written in a way that will reach children, but also educate adults and will help parents, sunday school teachers, and family members how to be better prepared to feed your celiac or gluten free family member. It's a great story for all ages! 5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, August 28, 2011 PMurphy - This is a wonderful tool for children with Gluten allergies. I can't wait to share it with my son's teacher. 5.0 out of 5 stars Adam's Gluten Free Surprise - Wonderful book!, June 28, 2011 KK Celiac - Wow, what a great book! I highly recommend this book for all families dealing with celiac disease or gluten sensitivities. It is a great way to help friends, families, and teachers understand the proper way to handle gluten free food. I wish this book had been available 10 years ago! 5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book, June 13, 2011 By GLEN N. HOLLOWAY This book is great for children and adults to learn about differences and how you can handle them. I bought this book earlier this year when it came out and plan to use it in my first grade classroom. It could be used for younger (kindergarten) or older students as well. The illustrations are fun and creative. I've also read it to my own children. Fun book!!! 5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone who has a child with Celiac Disease or Gluten Intolerance!!, June 9, 2011 By Cherie Cormier OK, so our book came today. I LOVE it! This a must have book for anyone who has a child with Celiac Disease or gluten intolerance. It is so helpful in explaining how important it is to be careful. It is also wonderful in that it shows Adam as an empowered child, who is not living a terrible live just because he can not eat what everyone else is eating! This is they way I am raising my daughter. To be a proud, healthy and a happy child!! And at 3 1/2, she is amazing! It actually brought tears to my eyes when they were doing the party. It worries me so much how Abigail, and to some extent others, will act when they learn how careful they need to be. Abigail knows to be careful, but she is a kid, and kids make mistakes. I often worry about how hard it will be for her at school. This is such a great book. I can not wait to read it to her and Connor at bedtime. And I can not wait to send it to school with her in the fall. It is really an informative book. I know it will help not only the other kids, but the teachers and staff as well! Thank you!!!! ~Cherie 5.0 out of 5 stars A must for a child with Celiac, especially one in school!!, June 7, 2011 By Lorraine As a parent, your book is GREAT& very well written. It is a must for a child with Celiac, especially one in school! When my daughter was diagnosed I contacted her teacher, she said she had lots of knowledge on celiac because she has a friend with it. But little to my surprise she was not as informed & did not know all about cross contamination! Recently her class was having a fruits, veggie & pretzel party the teacher sent me a note to send in pretzels & she stated in the note that my daughter would be ok with the fruits & veggies because they are Gluten Free. But I had to let her know that yes Fruits & Veggies are GF in their natural state, BUT due to cross contamination with utensils, countertops, hands, etc. my daughter could accidently ingest gluten. Your book is a very helpful tool and will DEFINATELY be going to school with her every year!! 5.0 out of 5 stars Very Educational, May 24, 2011 By Annette "Adam's Gluten Free Surprise" is very educational. The story gives a better understanding of living with Celiac Disease. The acronym is very helpful! I can finally remember what grains to stay away from when I cook gluten free! I'd highly recommend it! It is a great story to teach others about Celiac Disease! Thanks! 5.0 out of 5 stars Requirement for Every Teacher, May 12, 2011 By JDS This book is well written and a vital tool for every teacher! This would make a great gift for teachers for end of school year, Christmas, or just a thoughtful gift to a teacher to say thank you! 5.0 out of 5 stars Heart Warming, April 21, 2011 By Linda I actually had tears in my eyes while reading this book, I recommend this book to all Gluten Free Children, parents and grandparents. It is fantastic. 5.0 out of 5 stars Adam's Gluten Free Surprise, April 21, 2011 By Pamela J. Hoyle "PJ" A fantastic easy to read and understand book. This may be aimed at children but also helps adults understand the serious side effects of cross contamination. My 3 year old granddaughter(Grace) can relate to this book. She is highly allergic to peanuts and makes sure she tells me just that when she wants to read about Adam. I have Celiac disease and it helps Grace to understand so quickly why her 'Nana' cannot have something most people can eat. It just gives us another thing in common. I recommend this book to all family, friends and teachers of children with any food allergy. |
May 1, 2011 by Jenny “My 6 1/2 yr old son asked to see your book I bought yesterday at the GF Vendor Fair. He started to read it and smiled and said "hey, that's just like me!" : ) So far he's really liking reading this book..so thank you! After reading it myself, I will be sending it along with each if my 2 kids to have their teachers read. I try to educate them, and this will help in the process. I also plan to send it with them each new school year. This is a wonderful book! I had both kids read it and both got up from their chairs after reading a little ways into it and quoted certain lines and said..that's just like we do..or that's just like me! It really is a wonderful book and so nice to have something to make them feel like there’s someone else like them. The first comment right off the bat was about the snack jar. My son’s eye’s lit up and said, “hey, a snack jar just like I have!”

"Great book, donated one to my school and it has been read to many grades. It helps the kids who have Celiac and the other kids understand a little more why mine is eating something a little different without her having to explain it...again." Aug. 8. 2011 Here is my 7 year old daughter's review of your book: "I LOVED it!!! I think it is great for everyone with Celiac Disease!!! I am going to have my teacher read it to my class when I go back to school. Thank you for the book!!!!" June 7, 2011 by Lorraine: As a parent, your book is GREAT & very well written.
